P0111 Intake Air Temperature sensor 1 performance - After an engine off time of greater than 480 minutes. At ignition on the: ambient temperature reading is greater than -64°C (-83.2°F), engine coolant temperature reading is greater than -64°C (-83.2°F), intake air temperature reading is greater than -64°C (-83.2°F). After the engine started and the vehicle is driven above 48.3 kph (30 mph) for 30 seconds a determination is made.
Set conditions, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) compares the Ambient Air Temperature (AAT), Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT), and Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor values. If one sensor values is not within 15°C (59°F) of the other temperature sensors for two consecutive trips, a DTC will set. Default action the MIL Light will illuminate.
Step 2. Check for high resistance in the IAT Signal circuit
Step 3. Check for high resistance in the sensor ground
Step 4. Intake Air Temperature sensor
Possible causes:
- High resistance in the IAT Signal circuit.
- High resistance in the sensor ground circuit.
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor.
- Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
Diagnose code P0111-Intake Air Temperature sensor 1 performance
Step 1. Check for an active condition
Turn the ignition off, allow the vehicle to sit with the ignition off in an environment where the temperature is consistent and above -64°C (83.2°F) until the engine coolant temperature is equal, or close to the environmental ambient temperature. Turn the ignition on, with the scan tool, compare the AAT, ECT, and IAT Sensor values.
Is the Intake Air Temperature sensor value within 15°C (59°F) of the other two sensor values?
Yes, perform the PCM intermittent condition.
No, go to step 2.
Step 2. Check for high resistance in the IAT Signal circuit
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the IAT Sensor harness connector. Disconnect the PCM Harness connector, measure the resistance of the IAT Signal circuit between the IAT Sensor harness connector and PCM Harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes, go to step 3.
No, repair the IAT Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
Step 3. Check for high resistance in the sensor ground
Measure the resistance of the sensor ground circuit between the IAT Sensor harness connector and PCM Harness connector.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes, go to step 4.
No, repair the sensor ground for an open or high resistance.
Step 4. Intake Air Temperature sensor
Turn the ignition off, reconnect the PCM Harness connector. Turn the ignition on, with the scan tool, read DTC. The '' P0113-Intake Air Temperature sensor circuit high '' should display as active or pending with the Intake Air Temperature harness connector disconnected.
Turn the ignition off, connect a jumper the IAT Signal circuit and the sensor ground circuit at the Intake Air Temperature sensor harness connector. Turn the ignition on, with the scan tool, read DTC. The '' P0112-Intake Air Temperature sensor circuit low '' should display as active or pending with the jumper in place.
Do the DTC display as described above?
Yes, replace the Intake Air Temperature sensor.
No, go to step 5.
