P0461 Fuel Level Sensor 1 Performance

P0461 Fuel Level Sensor 1 Performance - If the PCM does not see a change in fuel level or greater than 0.06 volts after the calibrated amount of the fuel should have been consumed the diagnostic will fail. The MIL light is illuminate.

P0461 Fuel Level Sensor 1 Performance

When monitored with the ignition on, the engine running for more than two minutes, after the PCM decides that a calibrated amount of fuel should have been consumed (between one and three gallons depending on initial fuel level). This is determined by the accumulated amount of fuel injected into the engine through the fuel injectors.

Possible Causes

  • CAN Bus failure.
  • Obstruction to the fuel level sensor.
  • Fuel tank.
  • Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

Diagnostic test P0461 Fuel Level Sensor 1 Performance

Step 1. Check for fuel level sensor circuit DTC
Diagnose and repair any CAN Bus, communication or implausible signal DTC before proceeding with this test. Excessive pressure build up or vacuum in the evaporative system cold possibly contribute to this DTC being set. Diagnose and repair any evaporative system DTC before continuing with this fault. Turn the ignition on, with the scan tool, read DTC.

Are any fuel level sensor circuit DTC present?

YES, diagnose the appropriate fuel level sensor circuit DTC before continuing.
NO, go to step 2.

Step 2. Visually inspect fuel tank
Turn the ignition off, visually inspect the fuel tank for any abvious physical damage that may restrict the fuel sending unit float from moving.

Is the fuel tank damaged?

YES, replace the fuel tank.
NO, go to step 3.

Step 3. Internal inspection of the fuel tank
The fuel system is under a constant pressure (even with the engine off). Before testing or servicing any fuel system hose, fitting or line, the fuel system pressure must be released. Failure to follow these instructions can result in possible serious or fatal injury.

Remove the fuel tank, remove the fuel pump module. Visually inspect the inside of the fuel tank for any obstructions or deformities. Inspect the fuel level sensor for any signs of damage.

Were any issues found with the fuel level sensor?

YES, replace the fuel level sensor.
NO, go to step 4.
