P0073-Ambient Air Temperature sensor circuit high

P0073 code - with the ignition on, battery voltage greater than 10.4 volts. Set condition, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects that the Ambient Air Temperature sensor input voltage is above the maximum acceptable value. Default actions, the MIL light will illuminate.

P0073-Ambient Air Temperature sensor circuit high

Possible causes:
  • AAT signal circuit shorted to voltage
  • AAT signal circuit open/high resistance.
  • AAT sensor ground circuit open/high resistance.
  • Ambient Air Temperature (AAT) sensor.
  • Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) or Body Control Module (BCM).

Diagnose code P0073-Ambient Air Temperature sensor circuit high

Step 1. Check for an active DTC
Diagnose any CAN C Communication DTC before continuing.

Turn the ignition on, with the scan tool, read DTC.

Is the DTC active or pending ?

Yes, go to step 2.
No, perform the PCM intermittent condition.

Step 2. Check the AAT signal circuit for a short to voltage
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the AAT sensor harness connector. Turn the ignition on, measure the voltage on the AAT signal circuit in the AAT sensor harness connector.

Is the voltage above 5.2 volts ?

Yes, repair the AAT signal circuit for a short to voltage.
No, go to step 3.

Step 3. Check the AAT signal for an open/high resistance
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the TIPM/BCM harness connector. Measure the resistance of the AAT signal circuit between the AAT sensor harness connector and the TIPM harness connector.

Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms ?

Yes, go to step 4.
No, repair the AAT signal circuit for an open or high resistance.

Step 4. Check the AAT sensor ground circuit for an open/high resistance
Mesaure the resistance of the AAT sensor ground circuit between the AAT sensor harness connector and the TIPM harness connector.

Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms ?

Yes, go to step 5.
No, repair the AAT sensor ground circuit for an open or high resistance.

Step 5. Ambient Air Temperature sensor
Reconenct the TIPM/BCM harness connector. Connect a jumper wire between the AAT signal circuit and the AAT sensor ground in the AAT sensor harness connector. Turn the ignition on, with the scan tool, read DTC. The P0072-Ambient Air Temperature sensor low, should be active or pending with the jumper wire in place

Does the scan tool display as discribed above ?

Yes, replace the Ambient Air Temperature sensor.
No, go to step 6.
